Senior Legal Finance & Accounting Recruitment Trends in H1 2023

The recruitment market has been as busy as ever for Senior Legal Finance & Accounting roles so far in 2023.
Some areas that consistently have high job volumes include Commercial Finance / Finance Business Partner positions, Pricing and Tax, with roughly 50% of these hires being additional headcount.
Law firms are more information hungry than ever before, so there has been a big investment in technology and reporting tools to provide firms with better intelligence to aid decision making and ultimately increase profit margins.
Finance Business Partners
With that comes the need for commercially focused finance professionals to analyse and advise their Practice groups / firms on how they can achieve their targets.
Whilst most of the big law firms have already moved towards having these people sitting within designated Practice groups, the mid-tier firms are now following suit and starting to build out their finance business partnering teams with the same goal.
With high demand for these roles, the legal sector’s talent pool is limited. As a result, many firms have been recruiting Finance Business Partners from wider Professional Services to fill their roles, and from what we have seen, this has worked very successfully.
Pricing
Pricing continues to be a busy space and law firms are willing to pay a premium for those with legal pricing experience. Salary offers vs. experience is quite unbalanced as a result.
Tax
With the upcoming changes in how law firms are being taxed, there has also been an uptick in Tax positions coming onto the market, mostly at Tax Manager level or above.
There has been little movement for some time in the Senior Tax market, so we are seeing more candidates at this level who are looking for a new challenge, with some really exciting talent being open to moving roles within the legal tax space.
