The Rise of Interim Hiring in Legal Finance - Q2 2026

Back to Blogs

For this quarter’s market insights report, I wanted to shift the focus to explore the interim market within Legal Finance. Historically, fixed‑term contracts and temporary assignments in law firms were fairly predictable. They were used to cover the usual peaks and troughs, maternity leave, long‑term sickness, sabbaticals, or short‑term resourcing gaps. But over the past 12–18 months, the legal finance market has shifted in a way that’s hard to ignore.

One of the biggest changes I’m seeing is the sharp rise in newly created interim roles- not backfills, not cover, but newly created positions designed to solve immediate challenges or support strategic change.

And the reasons behind this shift say a lot about where the sector is heading.

1. Transformation is no longer a “project” it’s the norm

Many firms are in the middle of ongoing organisational change. Finance functions are modernising, structures are evolving, and expectations on data, reporting and commercial insight are rising fast.

Firms don’t always know what the final version of their team will look like.

So instead of committing to permanent headcount too early, they’re using interim hires to:

  • Bring in specialist skills quickly

  • Support transformation programmes

  • Stabilise teams during periods of uncertainty

  • Test new roles before making them permanent

This gives firms flexibility while still moving forward

2. M&A activity is creating short‑term pressure and long‑term ambiguity

Mergers, acquisitions, and strategic alliances are becoming more common across the legal sector. While these moves create exciting opportunities, they also create:

  • Integration challenges

  • System migrations

  • Temporary spikes in workload (due to sabbaticals etc)

  • Unclear future structures

Interim finance professionals are being brought in to bridge the gap - particularly in roles like:

  • Revenue & billing

  • FP&A

  • Commercial finance

  • Systems & transformation

  • Management /Financial Accounting

3. The demand for specialist expertise is outpacing permanent hiring cycles

Legal finance has become more technical, more data‑driven and more commercially focused. Firms often need niche skills now, not in three months’ time.

Interim hiring allows them to:

  • Access expertise immediately

  • Bring in senior capability without long onboarding cycles

  • Solve specific problems without long‑term commitment

  • Support teams during recruitment freezes or headcount reviews

4. Candidates are increasingly open to interim careers

This shift isn’t just employer‑driven. More finance professionals, especially those with strong technical backgrounds, are choosing interim work because it offers:

  • Variety

  • Flexibility

  • Exposure to transformation/ new skillset

  • Faster progression

  • Higher day rates

The stigma around contract roles has disappeared. In many cases, interim experience is now seen as a strength.

5. Exclusive partnerships are becoming the preferred model

With competition for talent increasing, more firms are turning to exclusive recruitment partnerships for interim hiring. This gives them:

  • Faster access to talent

  • A single point of accountability

  • Better market insight

  • Stronger candidate engagement

  • A more consistent process

It also allows recruiters to act as true advisors, something the market is valuing more than ever.

What does this mean for Legal Finance teams?

If your team is going through change, facing capacity pressure, or planning transformation, interim hiring can be a strategic tool, not just a stopgap.

And if you’re a candidate considering interim work, there has never been a better time to explore it. The demand is real, the roles are more interesting than ever, and the opportunities for impact are huge.

If you’re thinking about how interim talent could support your team, or you’re exploring contract roles yourself, I’m always happy to have a conversation. This is a market that’s moving quickly, and now is the perfect time to get ahead of it.
