Marguerite Clooney- My Career journey with Ambition

Back to Blogs

At Ambition, we believe careers should grow with you — evolving as your ambitions, circumstances, and priorities change. Whether that means specialising, stepping into leadership, or finding the flexibility to balance work and family life, we’re committed to supporting our people at every stage.

Marguerite’s journey is a powerful example of what a long‑term career at Ambition can look like.

Having joined Ambition an incredible 20 years ago, Marguerite is now our BD & Marketing Contract Specialist, focusing on interim and contract roles within legal and law firms. Over two decades, her career has spanned sectors, continents, leadership roles, and life milestones — with Ambition supporting each transition along the way.

Before relocating to London and joining Ambition, Marguerite worked in Sydney within recruitment and real estate, building a strong foundation in professional services. When she joined Ambition, she initially worked across wider professional services before naturally evolving into a specialist role within legal BD and marketing, where she now focuses exclusively on interim and contract recruitment.

What makes Marguerite’s story particularly compelling is how her role has evolved alongside her personal life. Early in her career, being a sole biller within a team was the right fit. Later, she stepped into management, leading a small BD and marketing temp team for several years. When her priorities shifted after getting married and starting a family, she transitioned back into a consultant role: a move fully supported by the business.

“I started at Ambition unbelievably 20 years ago. The company have absolutely supported each step of my career and each step of my personal life.”

Hi, I’m Marguerite Clooney, and I’m the BD and Marketing contract specialist here at Ambition. I started at Ambition unbelievably 20 years ago.

Before joining Ambition, I was working over in Sydney, doing recruitment there and also working in real estate prior to that. I’ve always really worked within professional services.

When I moved to London and started at Ambition, I was initially recruiting across wider professional services, but more recently I’ve specialised purely within legal and law firms, always focusing on interim and contract roles.

How has your career evolved since joining Ambition?

My career has really grown with the company. Initially, it worked better for me to be a sole biller as part of a team.

Later on, I wanted to try management, so I managed a small temp team on the BD and Marketing side for a number of years. Once I then got married and had children, I wanted to go back to being a biller again as a consultant.

The company have absolutely supported each step of my career and each step of my personal life, and it’s tuned in really well with my professional life.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

What I enjoy about my job is that we are constantly developing ourselves. We have our own individual goals, but we also have shared goals as a team and as a company, and that’s really important.

We all support each other, which makes it fun and enjoyable. We go out on meetings together, we’re always rooting for each other, and we genuinely want to place our candidates in the best roles and give our clients the best possible service. That’s really rewarding when we do that well.

Why do you think recruitment can be such a rewarding career?

Recruitment can be an incredibly rewarding career, particularly if you choose the right company to work for. Ambition has been fantastic for me and for many good consultants coming through, where you can really take your career to the next level.

It’s also a career where you can really develop. I’ve done billing roles and management roles, but you can also progress into different areas, sectors, or levels depending on the candidates you want to work with.

What kind of qualities are important to succeed at Ambition?

Some really key criteria would be being resilient, enjoying working with other people, being collaborative, developing relationships, and having common goals — for yourself, your team, and the firm.

It’s a very grown‑up environment and very trust‑based. We celebrate each other’s wins and successes, and we also support one another when we need help or guidance.

The people are fantastic — very genuine, very diverse, very collaborative, and very fun. If it hadn’t been like that year on year, I wouldn’t still be here. It just keeps getting better and better.

How has flexibility played a role in your career at Ambition?

Flexibility has been absolutely key on my journey with Ambition. When I first joined, I was single and working full‑time, five days a week.

Once I got married and had my first and second children, moving to a slightly reduced working week worked really well for me. What’s great is that the company has always been supportive of this, and it’s based on trust and how well we work and develop ourselves as consultants.

What training and development have you had access to?

Training has been continuous throughout my time at Ambition. We learn a lot from senior members of the business, and you’re also constantly coaching and mentoring more junior team members.

You’re always learning in recruitment. We also have excellent external trainers come in, and the training is very bespoke to how we work. Whatever training we need is always provided and supported.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining Ambition?

If you’re thinking about joining Ambition, you’d be joining a truly wonderful organisation — somewhere you’d enjoy what you do, develop your career, and feel supported every step of the way.

I think it would be an amazing decision to make. We’d welcome you on board, and there’d be no looking back.
