People with banking jobs 'should help bankrupt'

21 July 2010 07:48

Individuals who have been declared bankrupt are not getting access to products such as basic bank accounts, as they are not seen as profitable by providers, the UK Insolvency Helpline has suggested.

Ian Boden-Smyth, spokesperson for the body, told people in banking jobs that everyone should be allowed to have the ability to open an account.

He said: "This goes for everyone from a ten-year-old child to the worst bankrupt there is. They need a home for their money, a direct debit facility and a cash card."

However, Mr Boden-Smyth indicated that such institutions are keener on customers who will be with them for a considerable amount of time as they can offer them other products.

His comments follow a report by the Citizens Advice Bureau, which called on banks to provide basic bank accounts for bankrupts, with only two high street brands currently doing do - Barclays and the Co-operative Bank.
