Employers have a duty to further the skills of their workforce, it has been claimed.
People looking for
banking jobs in London may find that they are able to climb the career ladder faster if they are offered training by their employer, as the Guardian's Norman Pickavance states that one in five 16 to 24-year-olds are unemployed.
Commenting on the government figures, he claims that there appears to be a contradiction as to whether managers are training people in order to help them achieve a specific qualification, or to equip them for a specific job.
"Businesses need more freedom to set up programmes and more autonomy over what they teach, provided they deliver against agreed standards," he adds.
Without connecting qualifications to the industry where they are required, they will be "useless".
Recent research by the Higher Education Policy Institute revealed that male graduates are having a tougher time finding employment than their female counterparts.
