Harder pay negotiations expected, survey shows

8 February 2010 15:15

Those in accountancy jobs and others may find pay increases are harder to come by, as new research has revealed that union representatives fear negotiations regarding this are to be more difficult in 2010 than in 2009.

Conducted by the Labour Research Department (LRD), the survey indicated that 74 per cent of those in the public sector and 47 per cent of union officials in the private arena expect this to be tougher, People Management reports.

Pay and conditions researcher with the LRD Lewis Emery noted that it is obvious pay will not be the only priority for the coming year, adding that it could be too early to consider the effects of inflation.

"Maintaining jobs and business continuity is a greater concern … with almost three-quarters of respondents identifying it as a priority," he said.

Previous research from the company revealed that pay freezes are likely to continue into 2010, with its Payline database showing that new deals were fluctuating in 2009, with a low of 23 per cent being seen between August and October.
