BAME accountancy job seekers 'may lack confidence'

5 February 2010 16:15

Black and minority ethnic (BAME) people seeking accountancy jobs may lack the necessary confidence, it has been claimed.

According to Dr Rob Berkeley, director of the Runnymede Trust, while the number of such individuals in higher education has risen, they can still face barriers when trying to enter the work force.

He remarked: "BAME students still too often lack the networks and confidence to enter certain professions."

His comments follow the release of research by the Race for Opportunity campaign, which found that nearly one in six UK university students are from a BAME background.

However, it also discovered that such graduates are finding it difficult to secure work.

According to its report - which is entitled Race into Higher Education was was published in January this year - 56.3 per cent of BAME students who left university in 2007-08 found work within a year, compared with 66 per cent of white students.
