Development 'may lead to creation of speech and language therapy jobs'

Older workers can bring a considerable amount of experience to accountancy jobs and other roles, it has been suggested.

According to business minister Pat McFadden, such people are increasingly "the backbone" of the UK's economy.

He made his comments in an address to industry players and charities during a meeting comprising private and third sector experts.

The MP - who took up his current role in June last year - said employers should recognise the abilities of people in this age demographic and get the most from them.

He added: "As we continue to invest in growth, we need to make the most of all our talent and that means harnessing the skills of the older generation as well as the young."

This will put Britain in the strongest position possible in future, he went on to claim.

If firms can adapt to the needs of older workers, the rewards could be significant, Mr McFadden concluded.
