Employers 'should retain and develop those with marketing jobs'

4 February 2010 15:09

It is crucial for firms to treat people with marketing jobs - and others within their organisations - well and keep hold of them, it has been suggested.

According to Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute, although businesses may currently be under pressure as a result of the recession, this is no excuse to treat workers badly.

Her comments follow the release of research conducted by Speechly Bircham and Kings College, which identified poor employee relations as the main cause of workplace griping.

Ms Spellman said: "Retaining and developing talented individuals is key to business success, so managers need to focus on creating a talent culture to ensure that employees are nurtured and developed."

Managers can go a long way by placing an emphasis on the development of the teams they control, while excessively dominant styles of workforce management should be avoided, the expert went on to claim.
