Tax jobs seekers 'should not be assessed on appearance'
18 January 2010 08:06

People seeking tax jobs, as well as other forms of employment, should not be discriminated against on the basis of their appearance, it has been claimed.
According to Steve Williams, head of equality services at Acas, candidates have the right to be assessed according to their abilities and suitability for the role, as opposed to the way they look.
He added that, while there are no specific laws regulating weight discrimination, employers should refrain from making judgements based on superficial criteria.
His comments were made after the release of figures by Slimming World showing that one in four male bosses would turn down a potential employee purely based on their weight.
Mr Williams remarked: "We would always urge employers to judge on skills and abilities alone and not make assumptions."
He went on to suggest that businesses invest in keeping line managers' knowledge up-to-date in order to handle any weight-related bullying problems that may occur.
