Maintaining worker morale 'important'

23 November 2009 17:08

People searching for jobs in London may agree that the importance of a happy workplace should not be underestimated.

Best Companies, the compiler of the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to work For, has suggested firms should think twice before ditching Christmas parties because of the recession.

Founder and chief executive Jonathan Austin said such gatherings help workers feel like one big team, rather than lots of small, independent groups.

He explained this sense of unity can be useful in getting employees to act together on important issues.

Mr Austin stated: "Just because things are tight financially, a family wouldn't cancel Christmas."

Businesses should view the annual office party in the same way, he suggested, adding it is okay for firms to cut down on spending as "it's the togetherness that is the main thing".

Research by Best Companies also found employees appreciate being thanked by bosses for their hard work during tough times and asked if there is any support they require to carry out their duties effectively.
