TUC calls for an end to transgender discrimination

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on employers to stop discriminating against transgender individuals.

According to the federation of trade unions, this group of workers continue to face prejudice in their professional as well as their personal lives in the UK.

General secretary Brendan Barber commented: "Discrimination and hatred are part of the daily lives of far too many trans people in Britain."

He added: "Employers need to make sure all their employees are working in safe environments."

Mr Barber concluded that if Britain is to call itself a truly inclusive society, practical steps must be put in place to end discrimination against transgender people in workplaces and beyond.

This appeal was released to mark last Friday's (November 20th) Trans Memorial Day.

Nearly seven million employees in the UK, including some of those with London jobs, are represented by the TUC, which is made up of 58 affiliated unions.
