Write Stuff: CVs are sales documents

18 November 2009 14:10

CVs have been described as being sales documents rather than anything else, which should be used to promote personal attributes and achievements to prospective employers.

This is the opinion of senior consultant at The Write Stuff Peter Panayotou, who noted that the secret to creating a successful document is to use "action words and inspirational language".

However, he recommended that applicants for accountancy jobs in London and others ensure that they "stop short of saying anything that is untrue", although people cannot be held legally accountable for content on their CVs.

"Of course you have to dress it up," Mr Panayotou advised, stating that the hook is the profile section, which many people neglect filling in.

His comments come in response to research by Powerchex, which revealed that the number of candidates with discrepancies on their CVs has increased to 19 per cent, the highest level for three years.
