Nice: Mental health issues are costly for employers

Mental health issues, which include problems like anxiety, depression and stress, have been described as costly for employers in the UK by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice), with levels approximating £28.3 billion each year.

To help combat the effects of difficulties in this area, the organisation has launched guidance for companies to promote psychological wellbeing through ensuring proactive and healthy working conditions are in place.

Public health excellence centre director at Nice Professor Mike Kelly observed that the benefits of these methods are clear, stating that the guidelines explain how bosses can bring in changes to manage mental health more effectively.

"The financial incentives for employers adopting these approaches are significant," he said, adding that "the performing of annual audits of employee wellbeing are not common practice".

In support of the need for such documentation, the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development recently revealed that one in four workers in jobs in London and elsewhere feel their mental health is moderate or poor.
