Mental health 'a key issue' for employers

5 November 2009 17:17

The issue of mental health in the workplace is one that needs to be addressed by employers, findings from a new survey have indicated, as many British workers in London jobs and others would describe their wellbeing in this area to be questionable.

According to the study, conducted by the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD), one in four considers their mental health to be moderate or poor.

And 90 per cent of those suffering with such problems said their ability to perform in their jobs was affected.

Senior public policy advisor with the CIPD Ben Willmott observed that these statistics "provide compelling evidence for why employers need to become more proactive in how they manage mental health at work".

He went on to say that good people management by those on the frontline should be "the starting point" for tackling the concern.

Last month, it emerged that the Department for Work and Pensions launched an initiative to provide funding to smaller businesses to improve the health of their staff.
