Flexible working for fathers needs to be "more normal"

It needs to be "more normal" for men to work flexibly, an expert has recommended.

Commenting on the issue of work and parenthood, Sally Gimson, the director of communications at the Family and Parenting Institute, said fathers often feel they are not able to take time off to look after their youngsters.

"What we know is that fathers often feel that they want to spend more time with their children but they are made to work," she remarked.

Ms Gimson went on to suggest that there should be better paternity leave reserved for fathers - including those with marketing jobs - and this should be paid at the minimum wage.

Her comments follow the release of research conducted by the Equality and Human Rights Commission, which suggested that two-fifths of men surveyed feared that requesting flexible working would lead to their commitment to their jobs being questioned.

In addition, they thought it would have a negative impact on their chances of career progression.
