Marketing professionals 'may be increasingly in demand'

People seeking marketing jobs may find the number of opportunities available to them increases if comments made recently by an industry practitioner are accurate.

According to Mark Stuart, head of research at the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), advertising runs through the whole of businesses and as a discipline, it will become "a lot more important" over the course of next year.

He added: "The research we have done shows that the companies who ring-fence their marketing spend in a recession tend to be the ones that are in a better position to weather the recession ... and get back on their feet quickly."

There are two possible reasons for this, he continued.

Firstly, firms need to remain visible in order to attract custom and secondly, companies which can target consumers who are altering their spending habits because of the recession will be better placed to keep generating revenue.

A professional marketing body, the CIM has around 50,000 members worldwide.
