Retirement 'is an outdated concept'

17 August 2009 16:09

With an increasing number of older people continuing to work longer in life, the traditional view of retirement has little relevance, an industry expert has stated.

According to Rachel Krys, campaign director for The Employers Forum on Age, reform regarding people management in the face of an aging population is imminent.

"Many people make a good contribution at work and only short-sighted organisations would risk removing talented people just because a milestone birthday is approaching," she remarked.

Ms Krys went on to say that many employers have already taken steps in overcoming the retirement age barrier and are reaping the benefits of such action. She added that it is necessary to approach other businesses to "help [them] overcome their fears" regarding this.

Her comments follow a report by the Trades Union Congress that revealed older people in long-term unemployment are likely never to return to work unless support services are there to help them regain positions in such areas as accounting and finance jobs
