Australia launching new projects to 'entice' overseas workers

28 July 2009 17:30

Various new schemes are being instigated in Australia to bring in expatriate employees with required skills, according to Global Visas, a company designed to "take the stress out of immigration".

The points system for immigration, which has been in place for years, awards bonus marks on visas belonging to people with skills relating to high-demand industries, such as electricians and engineers.

Other visa changes include an increase of 4.1 per cent to the minimum salary level for temporary skilled workers.

Aside from immigration issues, the Australian Federal Government is improving the country's infrastructure, having invested AU$4.3 billion (£2.2 billion) in a rail link as well as channelling money into hospitals, roads and schools so as to tempt workers from abroad.

These moves by the Australian government follow the recent suggestion by Global Visas that the country's skills shortage means better prospects for those coming from overseas, particularly in regional areas such as Ballarat where accountancy jobs are under-staffed.
