Jobseekers 'need flexibility'
2 July 2009 11:22
People looking for work need to be flexible about the kind of jobs they will undertake, the Recruitment Society has said.
Steve Huxham, chairman of the professional membership body for HR specialists, explained that graduates and first-jobbers will find it difficult to enter the labour market this year.
As a result, they must learn how to be more adaptable and widen their search criteria.
He added that jobseekers should not panic but should take time out to review the wider employment arena and see what suits them best.
"So rather than necessarily just going for the big graduate recruiters, look around more widely, look at the local businesses," Mr Huxham advised.
"The more applications you make, the more effort you have put into those applications, the more opportunities you identify, [the more you can identify chances to] build your experience, that is what makes the difference."
Most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics show that there were around 444,000 job vacancies, including those for
banking jobs, in the three months to May.
