Firms 'need common sense during heatwave'
2 July 2009 11:22
Organisations need "a degree of common sense" about how they will make their staff work during the current heatwave, the Institute of Employment Studies (IES) has said.
A spokesperson for the employment think-tank explained that workplace productivity can only be maintained if it is "within the bounds of health and safety".
"If the culture of over-smartness is at the expense of efficiency then it is probably not a good idea," the representative added.
"The common sense answer is primarily to do with the image of the company being presented by the employee. So for non-customer facing staff, the issue is not the same as for customer facing."
Earlier this week, the Trades Union Congress, which represents the interest of six million workers in the UK, including those in
marketing jobs, called on firms to relax dress codes during the hot weather.
The Met Office's heatwave alert warning is currently at level three.
