'Recovery coming' to small firms
30 June 2009 15:00
Small firms in the UK are beginning to experience a "tentative recovery", according to new analysis from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
Research by the organisation, which represents the interests of small firms and start-ups in the UK, suggests that small enterprises were hardest hit at the end of 2008.
Data from the FSB now shows that there has been an increase in the proportion of firms experiencing a rise in trade volumes - 23 per cent compared to 16 per cent in February.
John Wright, national chairman of the organisation, said: "Small businesses are naturally flexible and innovative in recessions and these figures show that despite the very many negative forces on them, they are being cautiously optimistic and are looking to expand.
"Although we are certainly not out of the woods yet, many small firms are seeing increased footfall and finding it easier to obtain crucial finance than in the winter months, when things were at their worst so far."
More than 13.5 million people, including those in
marketing jobs, work for small firms in the UK.
