Parents 'look for flexibility in the workplace'

Staff that have children are interested in flexible working arrangements, Working Families has said.

Sarah Jackson, chief executive of the charity, explained that parents prefer employers that offer them family friendly working opportunities as well as the security that their jobs will be safe if they take parental leave.

"[What] most parents are looking for is some sort of flexibility – flexible working is top of the list. If you've got kids, you don't know what's going to happen tomorrow; you hope you do but you don't," she suggested.

"A good family friendly employer will be offering flexible working on return from maternity … [and] everything [else] that makes a woman who has been on maternity leave feel secure in her job and knows that she's coming back to a warm welcome and to an organisation who value her skills."

Since April, all parents, including those doing tax jobs, with children under the age of 16 have been able to request their employers for flexible working arrangements.

Previously, the right was only granted to parents with children under the age of six.
