South Wales centre to tackle workplace bullying

19 September 2008 11:30

A unique academic centre has been established in south Wales to research causes and solutions for problems of workplace bullying, it has been announced.

The Centre for Research on Workplace Behaviours at the University of Glamorgan will study the working environment of people employed in tax jobs in London.

It is estimated that bullying related issues led to around 33.5 million working days being lost during the whole of last year.

Michael Sheehan, the centre's director, told BBC News it was essential that proper protection strategies were implemented in order to improve employee value propositions

"Clearly the issue of workplace bullying is a serious matter and has implications, not only for those who experience being bullied at work, but also for those who witness the inappropriate behaviours and for organisations themselves."

"Such behaviours do little to contribute to organisational loyalty or commitment," he continued. "Nor do they enhance productivity, increase job satisfaction or decrease turnover."

The centre will also study issues of conflict resolution at work, alongside challenges relating to promoting equality and diversity.
