Wireless working on the rise in the UK

1 September 2008 11:40

The UK is rapidly becoming a wireless nation which may spell the end for office-based culture being the norm for British workers, a new study has claimed.

A report by the Centre for Future Studies indicated that the growth of wireless networks, alongside new broadband and mobile technology, has triggered the rise of the virtual office.

The study revealed that 63 per cent of north-east based SMEs now offer flexible working opportunities, including accountancy jobs involving elements of home working.

Ian Byron, sales director of IT provider Powerdial Systems, told the Evening Gazette that new technology is gradually adapting working practice to place less importance on the office.

"Call centres are weighing up options to allow staff to work from home. Technology is bridging the distance between the desktop and the corporate database".

"If you have a mobile phone in one hand and a computer in another, it doesn't matter where your desk is," he continued. "But you do need decent bandwidth to enable certain software systems to run effectively."

However, 62 per cent of SME executives also warned in the report that many staff lacked the appropriate IT skills to make the most of virtual office technology.
