Interim recruitment workers 'should be given equal rights'

20 February 2008 15:53

People who work in interim jobs for six months or longer need to be given the same rights as permanent employees, a number of bosses have said.

New research from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) found 35 per cent of employers felt this way - which conflicts with recent business campaigns to set the equality qualifying period to one year, Personnel Today reports.

A further 21 per cent of the 1,500 managers asked in the survey said interim workers should always have equal rights, no matter how long their tenure.

"If agency workers are to be given the same rights as permanent employees, it is crucial that we get the detail right," remarked CIPD spokesman Mike Emmott.

The Temporary and Agency Workers (Equal Treatment) Bill will face its second parliamentary reading on Friday. It is being backed by a number of major unions, including the Trades Union Congress, T&G and the Scottish Trades Union Congress.
